The Iconic Puzzle Game Didn't Triumph at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type May Address This Issue

Each time a major prize-giving event draws close, one notices an outcry for introducing fresh award types to acknowledge overlooked contributions and delight the passions of fans who have specialized interests.

A fellow writer has already made for a horror game category. That would rule. Equally deserving are tabletop games, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. But they will have to forgive me if I try to elbow in front since similar to blinkered fanatics, I possess a compelling case supporting my request is the most urgent and significant. This is the request: It's essential to create an award type for logic-based games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Classifying creative works is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and inevitably start arguments and end in fuzzy definitions. It's understandable that cinema institutions steer clear of genre categories. However, it represents an essential concession within the realm of video games, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.

For the full spectrum of interactive entertainment excellence to gain proper attention, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.

Present Award Structure

Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature genre categories for Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these six categories effectively encompass a lot of ground, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.

Not so for brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists to put them. Consider three of this year’s best games, each quite distinct: the architectural riddles in a particular game, intense tile-matching from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles from additional release. Where could they possibly go among existing types? Nowhere, that’s where.

The Representation Problem

Numerous examples exist outstanding logic titles launched regularly that have no home during gaming ceremonies, except when they manage to fit for categories like Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging small studio competitions.

  • One classic puzzle game received no recognition completely that year
  • Another creative title was excluded that year
  • Popular arranging title received no acknowledgment in 2021
  • Only a few logic titles managed to sneak into niche award types

Importance of Logic Titles

Commonly they're small games, but the art behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles rank among most engaged experiences globally and have been for over a decade.

The legendary block-stacking game competes with famous sandbox experiences for the title of most purchased experience; it also contends as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.

The Solution and Justification

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter this problem. It would be easy to populate a field of five interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.

And to reiterate, these represent titles without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers are working at the challenging frontier interactive creation, developing some of essential manifestations within interactive entertainment. Comparable to cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait decades.
