Nepal's Political Scene Witnesses Significant Partnership Formed By TV Host and Former Musician Mayor

In a significant development ahead of next year's general election, two high-profile figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition comes in the aftermath of widespread and deadly young people's protests that shook the country earlier this year and eventually led to the removal of the incumbent government.

A Commitment to Tackle Youth Demands

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially pledged to focus on the issues raised by the younger generation. This promise follows the violent anti-corruption protests that took place in September, which led to considerable loss of life.

"Agreement should not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane following the deal was signed.

The late summer revolt was triggered by widespread frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a spark for underlying resentment stemming from years of economic stagnation and longstanding accusations of systemic graft in politics.

Terms of the Fresh Electoral Partnership

According to the formal pact, the positions for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing broad discontent with the country's established political class. He has previously served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central figure in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He played a role in forming the interim government that came to power after the previous administration was removed.

Wider Political Consultations Taking Place

In a separate development, the current interim prime minister recently conducted consultations with several leading political figures. These discussions included former prime ministers and the presidents of other mainstream parties, marking the initial such gathering since the time of the uprising.

Following these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that conducting a free and fair election is a collective duty. The statement affirmed the government's dedication to ensuring a secure and fear-free environment for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
