Individuals Discontinuing Slimming Injections Put On Weight Four Times Faster Compared to Dieters

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

New research suggests that patients who discontinue blockbuster weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end conventional lifestyle plans.

Findings released in a major health publication points out that while overweight people can lose substantial amounts of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Individuals buying such medications must be cognizant of the danger of quick weight regain when the medication ends," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery suggests a reversion to starting mass within about a year and a half.

Weighing Treatments

The study, which looked at dozens of trials involving thousands of patients, contrasted the results of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.

Researchers point out that people who lose weight through dieting usually see a slower weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

Understanding the Rapid Regain

Doctors propose the way of the drugs accounts for the heightened regain.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels several times higher than normal could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also lessen responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Withdrawal of this medication means appetite is unsuppressed, making excessive eating much more probable."

A Lifelong Issue?

The NHS recommend the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians say that, due to the high risk of weight regain, the therapy might need to be long-term.

This opinion is supported by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "highlight the long-term character of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.

Patient Experiences

People who have come off the medication report a intense resurgence of appetite.

"It was like something flipping and you become extremely hungry," said a patient.

This difficulty is exacerbated if patients have not adopted sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Growing Use

Survey data indicate that millions of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire remaining high.

  • Adoption is greater among females than men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, researchers emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and maintained weight loss likely depends on integrated behavioural management.
