EU Might Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official Says

The EU might “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the United States against five European individuals working on combating digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe including the French president accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans targeted figures who have been central to efforts to enact laws governing American tech companies.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the move.

The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders argue the rules are essential to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.

This row risks becoming a facet of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash between Washington and European institutions.
