Cancellieri Shows Flashing Moments of Brilliance in Silver Lining for Unstable Lazio

The mood at their home stadium was far from happy this past Saturday. Lazio were trailing against Torino, a side that had allowed a total of 10 goals while managing only two goals in their most recent five league matches. Supporters from the Curva Nord were concluding their most recent demonstration in a continuous dispute with president Claudio Lotito.

This Year's Efforts Coming Unstitched?

Was the team's progress unraveling, or had there never been a binding element keeping it intact in the first place? They reappointed Maurizio Sarri as manager in the summer transfer window, only for him admitted that the board had failed to disclose the transfer ban they were set to be hit with for accounting issues. Rumours that he could resign were not true, but he did say that Lotito had "misled" him.

Lazio appeared equally disorganized on the pitch as they were off it, overcoming Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but losing the remaining opening fixtures, including the Rome derby. At any given moment, it's been difficult to determine if they're getting better or self-destructing.

Cancellieri's Surprising Return

A single player remained positive throughout. Matteo Cancellieri wasn't originally meant to feature for Lazio during this campaign. He was on last season on loan at Parma and, at the start of the off-season, Lazio were pushing for him to extend his stay for another season. The transfer ban led to a change of plans. The club couldn't risk to weaken their team without replacements.

He joined originally when Sarri was last in charge, then a 20-year-old alumnus of Verona's academy. He recorded 20 Serie A appearances for Lazio in the 2022-23 season, almost all of those from the bench. The ex- sporting director, Igli Tare, who departed at the end of that season, later stated Sarri of "telling everyone Cancellieri would be a star only to bench him consistently."

Finding His True Position

Maybe Sarri was persistently working to determine the nature of the player's talent. Billed as a wide forward on arrival, Cancellieri nevertheless spent much of that season as an unconvincing alternative to Ciro Immobile in the striker role. In 63 appearances during spells with Empoli and Parma during recent campaigns, he netted seven goals. Shoehorn
